666 Indicated Nero Caesar

The Greek version of the name (Nron Qsr) and title transliterates into Hebrew as נרון קסר, and yields a numerical value of 666. The Latin version of the name (Nro Qsr) drops the second Nun (נ), so that it appears as Nro and transliterates into Hebrew as נרו קסר, yielding 616.

My speculation on why these numbers were used instead of Nero's name, is that the Christians had to mask Nero's name somehow. If the Christians had a writing with Nero's name in it which called him a "Beast" - He would have just had them all killed for it. He was that maniacal.

666 in the Codex Sinaiticus

The number 666 is shown clearly in the Codex Sinaiticus. The Greek is clearly ἑξακόσιοι (hexakosioi) ἑξήκοντα (hexekonta) ἕξ (six).

616 in Papyrus 115

The number 616 is shown on this papyrus. It is thought to be a variant based on an alternative naming for "Caesar Nero".
