Did Jesus go to Hell when He died? Or was it Hades? Or is all this just hearsay? What really happened when Christ died and went into the grave? Let's take a look at what the Bible says about it.
Biblical:
Gen 37:35 - Jacob said he would go to Hades/Sheol to find his son when he thought Joseph was dead
Num 16:30 - Dathan and Korah are swallowed into Hades (see strong's for 'the pit')
Ps 16:10 - David says God will not leave his soul in Sheol/Hades
Matt 16:18 - the “gates of Hades” would not prevail, because Jesus went there and released the captives
Luke 16:19-31 - Abraham's bosom is the “righteous” part of Hades
Eph 4:8-9 - Jesus descended into the lower parts of earth (Hades)
Colossians 1:18 - He is the head of the body, the church, as well as the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he himself may become first in all things.
1 Peter 3:19 - Jesus 'proclaimed' to the spirits in prison/Hades
Rev 1:18 - Jesus has the keys to Hades and Death
Non-Biblical:
Book of Enoch
Chp 22 - details the place where the human dead were to be kept until Jesus came, Hades (http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/boe025.htm)
The Gospel of Nicodemus
Chp 2, 8 (http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/gospelnicodemus-roberts2.html) - note that Hades is the place of the underworld, and also the Angel that rules it. This text explains all about what Jesus did between His death/resurrection.
