Reasons Why Mystery Babylon is NOT Jerusalem

There are many reasons why Jerusalem CANNOT be the target of Revelation 17 and 18.

  1. Rev 17:1 - "the great whore" - Babylon seen as a woman. (Ps 137:8)
  2. Rev 17:1 - "the great whore" - Babylon did commit whoredom. (Ez 23:17)
  3. Rev 17:1 - "that sitteth upon many waters" - The one that "dwells upon many waters" is Babylon in Jeremiah 51:13. (Jer 51:13)
  4. Rev 17:1 - "that sitteth upon many waters" - Rome "sits upon many waters" being geographically border with water on almost every side, while Jerusalem is not. (please note usage of "many waters" throughout the Bible)
  5. Rev 17:2 - "the kings of the earth have committed fornication" - Babylon is specifically related to "whoredom" is Ezekiel 23:17. Babylon commits whoredom with both Israel and Judah. (Ez 23)
  6. Rev 17:2 - "drunk with the wine of her fornication" - Jeremiah says "Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad." (Jer 51:7)
  7. Rev 17:3 - "into the wilderness" - John (apostle) is carried to "the wilderness" to see Babylon the Whore. Jerusalem does not exist in the wilderness. Babylon was made into a wilderness by God. (Is 43:14-22, Jer 50:9-13, Jer 51:42-43, Ez 19)
  8. Rev 17:3 - "a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast" - Jerusalem did not "ride the Beast". The Beast is the principality behind Rome. Jerusalem does not ride Rome. Pompey conquered Jerusalem in 63 BC. Tiberius expelled the Jews from Italy in 19 AD. During the Alexandrian Riots of 38 AD, thousands of Jews were slaughtered by Roman citizens. Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome in 50 AD. Many skirmishes between Rome and the Jewish Zealots in the early first century resulted in the deaths of thousands of Jews. Rome "put up" with the Jews, tolerated them. And in many cases battled against them, including 70 AD. Babylon the Whore (the principality of Babylon) rides the Beast and is co-existent in Rome.
  9. Rev 17:4 - "arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls" - Purple and Scarlet (Red/Crimson), gold, stones, pearls are not specific to Israel. Purple linen, gold, scarlet - these are signs of wealth for many/any nation. (Ex 28, 2 Chron 2:14, Jer 10:9, Ez 27:7,16,22, Dan 11:38)
  10. Rev 17:4 - "golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication" - Jeremiah says "Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand". (Jer 51:7)
  11. Rev 17:5 - "BABYLON THE GREAT" - The whore is called Babylon.
  12. Rev 17:6 - "the blood of the saints" - The "saints" in this context are the first century Christians. Rome killed thousands of Christians. The Jews killed few. Some Christians actually lived peacefully inside Jerusalem with the Jews before 70 AD.
  13. Rev 17:6 - "the blood of the saints" - This phrase is only otherwise used in Revelation 16:6 as "they have shed the blood of saints and prophets". The context for "they" here is from verse 2, and is talking about "the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image". This would include Jews and Gentiles who worshipped the pagan gods of Rome, under sway of the Beast. (Rev 16:6)
  14. Rev 17:6 - "the blood of the martyrs of Jesus" - The "martyrs of Jesus" here refer to Christians who were killed for their testimony of Christ. Rome killed thousands of Christians. The Jews killed few.
  15. Rev 17:9 - "The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth" - Rome is the City on Seven Hills, it even had an ancient festival called "Septimontium" that was dedicated to the peoples of the seven hills of Rome. And again, Jerusalem nor the Jews "sit" on Rome. The pagan gods/idols of Rome do sit on those hills. (Cicero, Virgil; Samuel Ball Planter, "THE SEPTIMONTIUM AND THE SEVEN HILLS"; Robert E.A. Palmer, "The Archaic Community of the Romans"; Mary Beard, "SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome")
  16. Rev 17:10 - "seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come" - The seven kings are Julius, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius (five fallen), Nero (one is), and Galba (not yet come). These kings are of Rome.
  17. Rev 17:11 - "the eighth" - The eighth king is Otho. And all are connected to the Beast. All are from Rome.
  18. Rev 17:15 - "The waters... are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues" - Jerusalem and/or the Jews did not sit on peoples, multitudes, nations, languages. Rome did. It ruled "all nations" at the time of the writing of the vision.
  19. Rev 17:16 - "the ten horns ... these shall hate the whore... make her desolate" - The 10 principalities that were given power with the Beast "for an hour" would turn on Babylon/Rome and destroy her. Rome was destroyed over the next few centuries with plague after plague. (Rev 17:17, 19:19)
  20. Rev 17:16 - "make her desolate" - Jeremiah says God will "make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant". (Jer 51:29, 51:62)
  21. Rev 17:18 - "that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth" - Did Jerusalem reign over the kings of the earth? No. Rome? Yes.
  22. Rev 17:18 - "that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth" - Isaiah calls Babylon "the glory of kingdoms" and "the golden city". The ruler of Babylon was called "he that ruled the nations in anger". (Is 13:19, 14:4,6)
  23. Rev 18:2 - "Babylon the great is fallen" - Jeremiah says "Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed". (Jer 51:8)
  24. Rev 18:2 - "Babylon is fallen, is fallen" - The phrase "is fallen, is fallen" is quoted from Isaiah, about Babylon. Perhaps because it "fell" twice? (Is 21:9)
  25. Rev 18:2 - "Babylon is fallen, is fallen" - In Revelation 14, the same phrase is used, with no indication at all that it is anything other than Babylon itself. "Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." (Rev 14:8)
  26. Rev 18:2 - "is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird" - Isaiah echoes this statement, "wild beasts of the desert shall lie there... owls shall dwell there... beasts... dragons in their pleasant palaces." (Is 13:21,22)
  27. Rev 18:2 - "is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird" - Jeremiah echoes this statement, "wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein." (Jer 50:39)
  28. Rev 18:3 - "all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication" - See note on Rev 17:2.
  29. Rev 18:3 - "all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication" - Did Jerusalem/Jews fornicate with all nations? No. Rome did.
  30. Rev 18:3 - "the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies" - Jerusalem did not produce enough "delicacies" to provide for the merchants of the land to become rich. Rome did.
  31. Rev 18:4 - "Come out of her, my people" - How can Jews "come out" of Jerusalem? God has never said this in any prophecy. They can, however, come out of pagan Rome, Babylon.
  32. Rev 18:4 - "Come out of her, my people,... that ye receive not of her plagues" - Jeremiah says of God's people in Babylon, "My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD." (Jer 51:45)

  46. Rev 18:15 - "shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment" - Would you be able to see the burning of the temple, afar off? How does the burning of the temple in Jerusalem compared to the destruction of Pompeii by Mt. Vesuvius, when the ash from Vesuvius covered southern Italy and reached across the Mediterranean to northern Africa? Or perhaps the Great Fire of Rome which destroyed most of the city, a much larger fire than just the Jerusalem temple?
